The One Minute Manager by Ken Blanchard & Spencer Johnson: 10 Simple Lessons to Lead with Clarity and Compassion

Hey friends! Today, I want to share some practical and uplifting lessons from a book that made me see leadership and teamwork in a whole new way: “The One Minute Manager” by Ken Blanchard & Spencer Johnson. I picked up this book because I wanted to learn how to be a better leader—at work, at home, or anywhere. Reading it felt like getting wise advice from mentors who believe that small, simple actions can make a big difference. I’m excited to share what I learned, hoping it helps you lead and support others with more confidence and kindness.

10 Simple Lessons from “The One Minute Manager”

1. The Power of One Minute
Ken and Spencer teach that even a single minute can make a big impact. Taking just a moment to connect, encourage, or guide someone can change their whole day.

2. Set Clear Goals Together
The book reminds us to work with others to set simple, clear goals. When everyone knows what’s expected, it’s easier to succeed and feel proud of the results.

3. Give One Minute Praisings
Don’t wait to say “good job.” When you see someone doing something right, praise them right away. Quick, honest praise builds confidence and motivation.

4. Offer One Minute Redirects
If something goes wrong, address it kindly and quickly. Point out what needs to change, but do it with care so the person feels supported, not blamed.

5. Keep Feedback Short and Sweet
Feedback doesn’t have to be long or complicated. A few sincere words can help someone learn and grow.

6. Focus on the Behavior, Not the Person
When giving feedback, talk about what happened, not who someone is. This helps people feel safe and open to learning.

7. Catch People Doing Things Right
Look for the good in others and point it out. Noticing and celebrating small wins helps everyone feel valued.

8. Be Consistent and Fair
Treat everyone with the same respect and attention. Consistency builds trust and a sense of fairness in any team or family.

9. Take Time to Reflect
The book encourages us to pause and think about what’s working and what could be better. Reflection helps us keep improving.

10. Lead with Kindness and Clarity
The biggest lesson is that great leaders are both kind and clear. When you care about people and communicate well, everyone can do their best.

Conclusion

Reading “The One Minute Manager” made me realize that leadership isn’t about being bossy—it’s about helping others shine. Now, I try to set clear goals, give quick praise, and offer gentle feedback. I’m learning that small, thoughtful actions can make a big difference in any group. I hope you’ll join me in leading with kindness and clarity, one minute at a time.
